Screening Synopsis:
‘If you were to open people up, you’d find landscapes. If you were to open me up, you’d find beaches.’ Originally conceived as Agnès Varda’s farewell to cinema, this enchanting self-portrait, made in her eightieth year, is a free-spirited journey through her life and work. Revisiting the places that shaped her, from the North Sea beaches in Belgium, where she spent her childhood, to the Mediterranean village of Pointe Courte where she made her first film, via the seafront promenades of Los Angeles, where she lived with her husband, Jacques Demy, Varda reflects on a lifetime of creativity and inspiration, successes and struggles, joys and sorrows. Filled with images of wonder and fantasy, *The Beaches of Agnès* is a playful and moving account of a life lived fully and passionately in the name of cinema.
