▍ About the event
Synopsis: The Art of Medieval Hunting is an awareness-raising activity focusing on this age-old practice, which introduces visitors to two of the most important hunting practices of the medieval period: falconry and archery. Through exhibitions, demonstrations and activities, the public is invited to discover hunting techniques, gaining an understanding of how hunting has evolved over time and of the urgent need to preserve game species and their predators.
Classified as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO and recognised as National Intangible Cultural Heritage, falconry is an ancient hunting art that uses trained birds of prey, such as falcons, gyrfalcons and sparrowhawks. The activity includes the re-enactment of a falconry camp, where demonstrations, awareness-raising activities and historical context sessions are held, enabling participants to gain a close-up insight into this ancient practice and its cultural and heritage value.
Medieval Archery explores the use of the bow as a tool for hunting and defence during the medieval period. Participants have the opportunity to learn about the evolution of this practice, the different types of bows and arrows, and basic shooting techniques. The activity also includes the exhibition ‘Vícios do Campo’, dedicated to archery, which provides context for the evolution of this practice in Portugal and its relationship with hunting throughout history.
